GoDaddy Business Auction Cancelled

As WSJ reports, the private auction for domain registrar and hosting company GoDaddy was broken off last week while some potential buyers were performing due diligence. Potential bidders, including private-equity firms General Atlantic and TPG, were called last week and told the auction was off, the people said, leaving the interested parties hanging in the middle of due diligence. General Atlantic, which owns GoDaddy.com’s smaller competitor, Network Solutions, may have partnered with a couple of other buyout shops to make an offer, one of the people said. Now those efforts are over The bidders in the second round of the auction were well enough equipped to meet GoDaddy’s asking price tag of 1.5 to 2 Billion USD. None of the bidders was informed as to the reasons why the auction was pulled. Editor’s Note: The pulling of the auction seems similar to the withdrawal of the IPO the company in 2006. Read more...

FaceBook.com Sues FacePorn.com

According to ComputerWorld.com, Facebook filed suit on October 15th today against Faceporn.com, alleging  the site essentially copied Facebook to build an adult social networking platform “Until recently, Faceporn billed itself as “the number one socializing porn and sex network,” offering a range of pornographic content. However it now says it’s offline for a redesign. “We’re currently working to launch a completely new version of the site, and it will be the best porn site the world has ever seen,” Faceporn says on its front page.” According to court filings, Facebook alleges that Faceporn “blatantly copied the Facebook logo, site and Wall trademark.” Screen shots filed with the lawsuit show some Facebook-like elements, including Wall postings and a similar blue-and-white color scheme. Instead of poking, Faceporn users can apparently “send a flirt,” according to the screen shots. Facebook asks the court to order Faceporn to hand over its Web domain and Read more...

Sex.com Domain Sold for $13M

Finally, the bidding war for famed sex.com has come to an end. According to reports from Informationweek, Clover Holdings has agreed to pay $13 million for the rights to the domain. The domain became available in July 2010 when the previous owner, Escom filed for bankruptcy. Completion of the sale is expected to be finalized by late October. No details have been released yet on what the site will now feature, but I’m sure its safe to assume what the topic will be on. http://www.informationweek.com/news/internet/ebusiness/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=227900477&queryText=sex.com Read more...

WSJ: GoDaddy is Up For Sale

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that The Go Daddy Group is putting itself up for sale, citing unnamed sources. The Go Daddy Group runs domain name registrar GoDaddy.com. These sources tell WSJ that the company has retained Qatalyst Partners, a firm run by veteran technology banker Frank Quattrone, to shop the company. WSJ’s sources quoted 2009 revenue for the company of between $750 million to $800 million. These sources were either referring to sales or they have incorrect information, as GoDaddy’s actual revenue for 2009 was $610 million. The company previously told me it is forecasting $940 million to $950 million in gross sales this year. With operating cash flow of around $150 million this year and steady growth, the company should fetch over $1 billion. However, potential buyers beware: during the lengthy checkout process you will be offered a number of add-on companies for sale, and might end up spending much more than you originally planned. Google May Change Domain Parking Requirements

DNS parking may be required in the future. A few days ago Sedo informed its customers that its primary advertising provider (read: Google) may change the way it allows domains to be parked. URL forwarding will be out and all domains will need to be parked using DNS. This change has been rumored for a while and likely has to do with tighter control and transparency for parked domains, as well as changes to how parked ads are served technically. According to the communication from Sedo: Based on current discussions it is possible that our ad provider will cease its provision of advertising to URL-parked pages and in consequence only support DNS parked domains. This step is considered by the online advertising provider in response to advertiser feedback and would affect all URL-parking customers at all parking companies worldwide that share this advertising provider. This change could happen in the near future (potentially as early as the fourth quarter of 2010) and we wanted you to Read more...

DNS.com Charges Ahead Thanks in Part to Great Domain Name

DNS company gets marketing kick with DNS.com. Last month at HostingCon I met with Cloud.com to learn how their great domain name has propelled their business. I also got to spend time with domain industry show regular Sean Stafford, who’s latest venture DNS.com is off to the races. He proudly wore his DNS.com t-shirt throughout the show. Over tacos at lunch, Sean said that the DNS.com domain name has done wonders for his business. I caught up with him after the show to find out more. DNW: You were previously named Comwired.com. What were the challenges of using this name? Stafford: We began with the Comwired name and we still actively use it. It was a domain from the portfolio of one of our founders and was selected as a brandable, pronounceable tech name to represent our company. Initially Comwired.com was used for our geodirectional DNS system and authoritative DNS network. As our platform matured, we developed two distinct products serving two markets with very different Read more...
